Seminar 26-31 May 2008

Why walk?

RECENT SURVEYS REFLECT THAT WE ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE INACTIVE IN OUR LIFESTYLES WHICH IS RESULTING IN AN UNHEALTHY AND SEDENTARY SOCIETY.

The World Health Organisation, and indeed nationally through the Irish Heart Foundation suggest, that we should target at least 30 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Regular physical activity is one of the main factors which help reduce your risk of heart attack. Exercise can also improve blood pressure and help reduce cholesterol. Being active is the one factor that you can influence and change yourself without medication or treatment, and usually with very little cost.

Donegal Walking Week 26-31 May 2008

Date: 26/05/2008

Portnablagh (Port na Bláiche)
Donegal Walking Week.

It is a major event in the Moville calendar.

I've suggested in the past that it could be re-titled the Moville Fayre as it has people in period costumes selling their wares as well as lots of fun things to do - especially for children.

Oideas Gael, Gleann Cholm Cille. 074 9730248
The course is aimed at teachers and other individuals who may not have access to a traditional gas or electric kiln, but who would like to learn and understand an alternative process of production. A qualified teacher and ceramicist will teach the course with ongoing experience in the field of art education and curriculum development.

Raku is a very ancient and exciting method of firing pottery originating in the Far East. It is a process that generally takes place out of doors and brings the participant very close to the actual changes that occur within the kiln during firing. It is relatively inexpensive and simple to set up, other similar methods include dustbin and bonfire firings. Although 100% success is not guaranteed with every piece the process is sufficiently rewarding to sustain interest over lengthy periods and quite stunning results can be achieved with a little time and experience.

During the course participants should expect:

1.	To discuss project ideas for the classroom and cross-curricular opportunities for development.
2.	To learn basic clay skills
3.	To learn methods of strengthening clay for the raku process
4.	To learn how to apply glaze
5.	To learn alternative methods of finishing, e.g. burnishing
6.	To learn how to fire the kiln
7.	To learn how to take source ideas from the locality for use in making & decorating processed.
8.	Additional information will be available at the end of the course regarding materials, tools, equipment and resources.
9.	Pots produced over the five days can be taken away at the end.

All materials will be provided for participants on the course.
You should however bring: Sketchbook & pencils 2B/4B - colours optional (paint & pencils)
Old clothes/apron, old coat to wear if firing outdoors.

Tá an cúrsa seo dírithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil caighdeán ard Gaeilge labhartha acu, a bhfuil roinnt eolais acu cheana ar ghramadach na teanga ach ar mian leo eolas níos fearr a fháil uirthi. Tá sé oiriúnach do dhaoine a úsáideann an Ghaeilge go rialta ina gcuid oibre, mar shampla múinteoirí, craoltóirí, iriseoirí agus scríbhneoirí. Tá sé fóirsteanach chomh maith do mhic léinn atá ag déanamh staidéir ar an Ghaeilge san ollscoil.

Beidh an bhéim ar scríobh agus ar léamh na teanga ach beidh gníomh-aíochtaí cainte i gceist chomh maith.

Tabharfar tús áite don Chaighdeán Oifigiúil seachas do chanúint faoi leith ar bith.

Seo cuid de na nithe a bheidh i gceist sa chúrsa:
•	foclóir nua-aimseartha ag baint le réimsí mar na meáin chumarsáide agus cúrsaí reatha;
•	cleachtaí éisteachta ina mbeidh béim faoi leith ar chúrsaí nuachta;
•	cleachtaí scríbhneoireachta, mar léirmheasanna gairide, litreacha agus achoimrithe;
•	cluichí agus comórtais ghramadaí
•	cora cainte úsáideacha atá le fáil sna canúintí éagsúla;
•	cleachtaí cainte, mar dhíospóireachtaí agus rólghníomhaíochtaí.

Modh múinte
Chomh maith le hobair aonair, beidh obair bheirte agus obair ghrúpa i
gceist sna ranganna.

Even though there was only 7 weeks from the idea to the roll out, news of it spread throughout Ireland fast.

We had bands and musicians from Belgium, France and England as well as Ireland performing in the streets and in the pubs all weekend.

It was featured in Downtown Radio, Foyle Radio, ICR and I was even on the Dave Fanning Show talking about it for 6 or 7 minutes.

It was also reported in HotPress, the Mirror and the Star as well as in all the local newspapers.

Rawdons and Rosatos had their best Saturday nights ever and the Town Clock tripled its normal Saturday business and quadrupled its Friday business.

McGettigans ran out of beer and the Bar-A-Cuda ran out of Tennents.

Goodness knows how Maguires did as the outside events were right outside their door.

Seamy's chip shop was pandemonium for 3 hours on the Sunday - and not local person came in.

This Summer School is conducted in the heart of the Sliabh Liag peninsula in the South-West Donegal Highlands. The dramatic landscape and coastline of this area is the setting for this course of painting tuition for beginners and improvers. The daily schedule will be flexible and participants are assured of personal guidance and attention from our accomplished guest tutor. There will usually be two sessions per day, some possibly early morning to capture light variables.

Students need only bring with them materials for their own preferred media such as acrylic, gouache or oils. They also need a sketch pad, a selection of two or three brushes and we suggest that you bring a discarded knife for mixing colours, a palette (a dinner plate will do), some rags and treated boards or canvas, an easel would also be of advantage. Some materials will be available at the course location for further requirements.

	Is cúrsa é seo do mhúinteoirí atá ag múineadh na Gaeilge do dhaoine fásta ag gach leibhéal in Éirinn agus thar lear. Tá sé oiriúnach:
•	do mhúinteoirí nach bhfuil mórán taithí acu;
•	do mhúinteoirí nach bhfuil aon cháilíocht fhoirmiúil (ar nós an Ard-Teastais
	san Oideachas) acu;
•	do mhúinteoirí bunscoile agus meánscoile ar mian leo níos mó eolais a fháil
faoi mhúineadh daoine fásta.

Aidhmeanna an chúrsa

1.	Múinteoirí a chur ar an eolas faoin mhéid atá tar éis titim amach i múineadh teangacha le breis is fiche bliain anuas;
2.	féachaint go mion ar an chur chuige cumarsáideach agus ar an dóigh le hé a chur i bhfeidhm sa seomra ranga;
3.	múinteoirí a chur ag smaoineamh faoi cad é go díreach ba cheart dóibh a
	mhúineadh ina gcuid ranganna;
4.	seans a thabhairt dóibh ábhar nua múinte a thriail agus a mheas;
5. seans a thabhairt dóibh smaointe, moltaí praiticiúla agus tuairimí a mhalartú.
Modh múinte

Beidh páirt an-ghníomhach ag na múinteoirí sa chúrsa. Ceardlanna seachas léachtaí
a bheas i gceist agus beidh deis acu a gcuid tuairimí a chur in iúl agus tarraingt
ar a dtaithí. Beidh béim láidir ar obair bheirte agus ar obair ghrúpa sna seisiúin seo.

Beidh cleachtadh múinteoireachta ar siúl dhá uair sa lá i rith an chúrsa, rud a thabharfaidh deis do na múinteoirí triail a bhaint as ábhar agus as modhanna
nua múinte. Ní bheidh sé éigeantach cleachtadh múinteoireachta a dhéanamh.

Iarrtar ar mhúinteoirí ábhar a úsáideann siad ina gcuid ranganna a thabhairt leo, más
mian leo.

Despite the beauty of this peninsula, it is relatively under-utilised by walkers, even in the height of the ssummer sseason. All routes, followed by Oideas Gael, vary in difficulty and give participants a chance to see the best of South Donegal’s wild and varied coastal scenery. This area forms part of the Donegal Gaeltacht and it is hoped that walkers will be able to use their knowledge of Irish during the course of the week’s holiday, or if new to the language, that they will practise a few works and expressions. Emphasis is on enjoyment and the evenings are spent listening to some of the traditional music, for which the area is famous & to join in the craic which accompanies the OIDEAS GAEL programme of courses. These walks will not involve any rock climbing and some are quite long and strenuous. It is essential, therefore, that participants ensure that they are fit enough to undertake such exercise (all walks are 4-6 hours long).

Sult agus sásamh is mó atá i gceist sa chúrsa & beidh am go leor tráthnóna le h-éisteacht leis an cheol tíre a bhfuil cáil ar an réigiún dá bharr agus taitneamh a bhaint as ach chraic a bhíonn mar ghnáth chuid de chúrsaí Oideas Gael. Cé nach mbeidh ailleadóireacht i gceist sna siúlóidí beith roinnt acu measartha fada agus maolach agus caithfidh luacht an chúrsa a chinntiú go mbeidh siad

Each course contains three or more levels: Beginner, intermediate and advanced and is usually of one week’s duration. Class tuition is by specialist teachers who use graded courses, supported by modern audio-visual resources, as well as other proven methods of language teaching. The daily schedule consists of intensive morning and afternoon tutorials with attention directed towards spoken Irish (except for some units at the highest level), aiming at correct pronunciation, proper idiom and development of vocabulary, particularly of contemporary life. Our aim is to foster conversational ability and fluency, with some 35 language contact hours per course. Recreational activities such as dancing, poetry, or guest lectures take place each evening, after which participants are free to practise their Irish with people from all other levels while enjoying the craic in the local pubs. The Social format of the courses ensures that people attending on their own, quickly feel comfortable and at ease within the group. It has been the experience of the Directors that those who have completed a two-week programme succeed in achieving a marked improvement in fluency. For a long time it has sat desolate among the scotch pines quiet as a temple, the only sounds, the snoring of an old dog dreaming on the floor and a bluebottle racing from the beer taps to the dart board and back. Many strange characters have stumbled this way over the years, tonight they return, will they be satisfied with the singer or will he get his throat cut.
Little John Nee continues to dodge pigeon-holes with his exuberant melting pot of storytelling, visual comedy, pathos, and live music. He is currently the Galway City and County Theatre Artist in Residence.

It wasn't as big a success as the Dylanfest in 2007 but it took place when everybody had gone back to school, university, college and work.

It still was like a good bank holiday weekend, though and many pubs, restaurants and hotels did well out of it.

Lisa Hannigan in concert

Date: 18/07/2008

Ballybofey (Bealach Féich)
Best known for her collaborations with Damien Rice & her role on ‘The Cake Sale’ charity album including the massive hit Some Surprise Lisa is a prolific and very talented singer-songwriter.

In iardheisceart Chontae Dhún na nGall atá cuid de na limistéirí siúil is fearr in Éirinn, le Sliabh Liag a mheastar a bheith ar an bhinn mhara is mórthaibhsí san Eoraip. D’ainneoin áilleacht na leithinise, ní thaithíonn siúlaithe cnoc an oiread sin í, fiú le linn ardséarsúr an tsamhraidh, as siocair í bheith chomh scoite sin. Tá rogha siúlóidí á tairiscint nach ionann deacracht; tugann gach ceann acu deis do shiúlaithe breathnú ar éagsúlacht radharcanna fíoráille de chuid chóstaí iargúlta dheisceart Dhún na Gall. Cuid de Ghaeltacht Dhún na nGall é an ceantar seo agus táthar ag súil go mbeidh ar chumas siúlaithe a gcuid Gaeilge a úsáid le linn shaoire na seachtaine, sin nó, mura bhfuil an teanga ar a dtoil acu, go dtógfaidh siad abairt nó dhó. Sult agus sásamh is mó atá i gceist sa chúrsa & beidh am go leor tráthnóna le h-éisteacht leis an cheol tíre a bhfuil cáil ar an réigiún dá bharr agus taitneamh a bhaint as ach chraic a bhíonn mar ghnáth chuid de chúrsaí Oideas Gael. Cé nach mbeidh ailleadóireacht i gceist sna siúlóidí beith roinnt acu measartha fada agus maolach agus caithfidh luacht an chúrsa a chinntiú go mbeidh siad

Is iad aidhmeanna an chúrsa ná:
•	léargas a thabhairt ar fhadhbanna coitianta san aistriúchán ó Bhéarla go Gaeilge agus ar straitéisí chun dul i ngleic leo
•	teicnící eagarthóireachta a theagasc
•	meon criticiúil a fhorbairt chun gur féidir caighdeán an aistriúcháin a mheas
•	léargas a thabhairt ar na fadhbanna a bhaineann le húsáid na nuathéarmaíochta i nGaeilge

An mbeidh sé oiriúnach domsa?
Ní cúrsa teanga é 'Ó Bhéarla go Gaeilge'. Is cúrsa é le haghaidh daoine a bhfuil ardchumas Gaeilge acu agus atá ag obair mar aistritheoirí nó ar spéis leo tabhairt faoi obair sin. Tugtar léargas ar ghnáthobair an aistritheora agus ar na scileanna a theastaíonn ó lá go lá m.sh.doiléire agus débhríocht a sheachaint sa Ghaeilge scríofa, na foclóirí a úsáid, leaganacha canúna agus leaganacha caighdeánacha a aithint thar a chéile srl.

Ábhar an chúrsa
Tabharfar cóip de théacsleabhar an chúrsa do na rannpháirtithe go léir. Ní bheidh téacsanna fada le haistriú le linn an chúrsa. Ina ionad sin beidh abairtí agus sleachta gearra le haistriú a léiríonn fadhbanna agus dúshláin faoi leith m.sh. béarlachas, an focal ceart sa chomhthéacs ceart, rudaí na n-aistrítear de ghnáth srl. Is téacsanna neamhliteartha (tuarascálacha, bileoga eolais, suímh ghréasáin srl.) is mó a bheidh i gceist. Beidh eagarthóireacht le déanamh ar théacs nó dhó. Ní gá do rannpháirtithe aon trealamh a thabhairt leo ach peann agus páipéar agus cóip de Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla Uí Dhónaill. Cé gur ábhar 'trom' go leor atá san aistriúchán bíonn plé breá bríomhar ann i gcónaí maidir leis an leagan Gaeilge is fearr.

Teagascóir
Tá sealanna caite ag Antain Mac Lochlainn i mbun sheirbhís aistriúcháin Bhord na Gaeilge, ina eagarthóir scripte le RTÉ, agus ag obair mar shaoraistritheoir. Tá suim ar leith aige in oiliúint aistritheoirí. Ba é a cheap an tArd-Dioplóma san Aistriúchán in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad agus a theagasc an cúrsa sin. I measc na bhfoilseachán leis tá Cuir Gaeilge Air (Cois Life 2000) agus Speaking Irish: Take Your Language Skills Beyond Basics (McGraw-Hill 2007). Tá sé ina bhall gairmiúil de Chumann Aistritheoirí agus Teangairí na hÉireann.

Clár ama
Bíonn na ranganna ar siúl ó Luan go hAoine. Tosaíonn seisiún na maidine ar 10.00am agus leanann an obair ar aghaidh go dtí 5.00pm le sos lóin dhá uair an chloig idir 1pm agus 3pm. Bíonn dhá shos tae ann gach aon lá.

Set in this lively Irish-speaking environment our courses here provide participants with an unequalled opportunity for social and cultural interaction with a vibrant community of diverse ages and talents. Oideas Gael Language courses are specially designed to cater for the needs of adults at all learning stages, including those who are more advanced but in need of practice. The rafts start the race in the protected bay area and then have to come around the pier for the rest of the race.

When the water's a bit choppy it can resemble The Grand National for all the 'fallers'.

There are rescue boats on standby though to fish out the less skilled (or unlucky) rafters.

The raft race is always very well supported and there is always great excitement as the orders are given to pull the rafts to the starting line.

Nancy Griffith Concert

Date: 05/08/2008

Letterkenny (Leitir Ceanainn)
Nancy Griffith is playing at the Mount Errigal on the 5th of August. Tá an cúrsa seo dírithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil caighdeán ard Gaeilge labhartha acu, a bhfuil roinnt eolais acu cheana ar ghramadach na teanga ach ar mian leo eolas níos fearr a fháil uirthi. Tá sé oiriúnach do dhaoine a úsáideann an Ghaeilge go rialta ina gcuid oibre, mar shampla múinteoirí, craoltóirí, iriseoirí agus scríbhneoirí. Tá sé fóirsteanach chomh maith do mhic léinn atá ag déanamh staidéir ar an Ghaeilge san ollscoil.

Beidh an bhéim ar scríobh agus ar léamh na teanga ach beidh gníomh-aíochtaí cainte i gceist chomh maith.

Tabharfar tús áite don Chaighdeán Oifigiúil seachas do chanúint faoi leith ar bith.

Seo cuid de na nithe a bheidh i gceist sa chúrsa:
•	foclóir nua-aimseartha ag baint le réimsí mar na meáin chumarsáide agus cúrsaí reatha;
•	cleachtaí éisteachta ina mbeidh béim faoi leith ar chúrsaí nuachta;
•	cleachtaí scríbhneoireachta, mar léirmheasanna gairide, litreacha agus achoimrithe;
•	cluichí agus comórtais ghramadaí
•	cora cainte úsáideacha atá le fáil sna canúintí éagsúla;
•	cleachtaí cainte, mar dhíospóireachtaí agus rólghníomhaíochtaí.

Modh múinte

In iardheisceart Chontae Dhún na nGall atá cuid de na limistéirí siúil is fearr in Éirinn, le Sliabh Liag a mheastar a bheith ar an bhinn mhara is mórthaibhsí san Eoraip. D’ainneoin áilleacht na leithinise, ní thaithíonn siúlaithe cnoc an oiread sin í, fiú le linn ardséarsúr an tsamhraidh, as siocair í bheith chomh scoite sin. Tá rogha siúlóidí á tairiscint nach ionann deacracht; tugann gach ceann acu deis do shiúlaithe breathnú ar éagsúlacht radharcanna fíoráille de chuid chóstaí iargúlta dheisceart Dhún na Gall. Cuid de Ghaeltacht Dhún na nGall é an ceantar seo agus táthar ag súil go mbeidh ar chumas siúlaithe a gcuid Gaeilge a úsáid le linn shaoire na seachtaine, sin nó, mura bhfuil an teanga ar a dtoil acu, go dtógfaidh siad abairt nó dhó. Sult agus sásamh is mó atá i gceist sa chúrsa & beidh am go leor tráthnóna le h-éisteacht leis an cheol tíre a bhfuil cáil ar an réigiún dá bharr agus taitneamh a bhaint as ach chraic a bhíonn mar ghnáth chuid de chúrsaí Oideas Gael. Cé nach mbeidh ailleadóireacht i gceist sna siúlóidí beith roinnt acu measartha fada agus maolach agus caithfidh luacht an chúrsa a chinntiú go mbeidh siad

Courses are officially recognised by the Department of Education.

Take Your Pick

Date: 17/08/2008

Letterkenny (Leitir Ceanainn)
Take your Pick every Sunday Night at the Ramada Encore

Music with Mick Denver

Date: 22/08/2008

Milford (Baile na nGallóglach)
Keith McDonald

Date: 22/08/2008

Donegal Town (Dún na nGall)
Keith McDonald in the Central Hotel

Patrick Feeney

Date: 23/08/2008

Donegal Town (Dún na nGall)
Patrick Feeney in The Central Hotel

Cúrsa Gaeilge/Irish Language Course

Date: 23/08/2008

Glencolmcille (Gleann Cholm Cille)
Oideas Gael Language courses are specially designed to cater for the needs of adults at all learning stages, including those who are more advanced but in need of practice.
